Layoffs and unemployment
Do the following if you are laid off or become unemployed
Hi BBA, did you lose your job?
We have compiled a list of action items for unemployment or layoff. Let's go forward together!
CHECKLIST FOR UNEMPLOYED OR LAID-OFF TRADENOMIS
1. Register as a job seeker with the TE Services
Registration is done electronically on the TE Services Työmarkkinatori website.
- Registration must be done no later than the first day of layoff or unemployment. You cannot start your job search retroactively.
- You can only receive unemployment allowance for the period during which your job search has been in effect. If the layoff is arranged in "pieces," you must keep your job search in effect for the entire period during which the layoff days are scheduled.
- You must report your own business activity (including self-employment, etc.) and unfinished studies when starting your job search. The TE Services will request more detailed information from you about this and will investigate the impact of your business activity or studies on your right to unemployment allowance.
Everyone applying for unemployment allowance must fill in the "I am looking for full-time work" section when registering as a job seeker. This also applies to partially laid-off employees.
The laid-off and unemployed have a job search obligation
- The statutory job search obligation applies only to those who have been laid off for at least three months. The job search obligation applies to the fully unemployed from the beginning of unemployment. More information on the job search obligation is provided in the TE Services instructions below.

2. Apply for unemployment allowance from KOKO-kassa
- To receive unemployment allowance from KOKO-kassa, you must have been a member for at least 12 months and accumulated the 12-month employment condition. If you have not yet met this requirement during your membership, you must apply for unemployment allowance from Kela.
- If you have been laid off completely or have become unemployed, you can submit your first application after two weeks of layoff/unemployment. The daily allowance is paid after a seven-day waiting period.
- If you have been laid off partially and are working a shortened working day or week, the length of the first application period may depend on factors such as the payroll period. You can ask KOKO-kassa for more detailed instructions on application periods and filling out applications.
- The way a layoff is implemented affects how unemployment allowance is paid. Read more on this topic here.
- KOKO-kassa's eAsiointi will guide you automatically in filling out the
- application. During the application process, you can receive advice if necessary via KOKO-kassa's customer service chat.
