Changing the Finnish title on vocational Master’s degrees
- Goal
The greatest challenge of the Master’s (UAS) degree is recognition
Those who have completed the Master’s (UAS) degree are highly employable, and the degree also increases their earnings. The degree has been available for 20 years, but the competence provided by the degree is nevertheless poorly known in working life. It’s in everyone’s interest that the competence provided by the Master’s (UAS) degree is better known in working life. We propose changing the Finnish degree title to Maisteri AMK.
The job description and responsibilities of those who have completed the Master’s (UAS) degree develop and the employee’s motivation improves with the studies. Those who have completed the degree also think it’s a high-quality degree. Employers consider the Master’s (UAS) degree to be more suitable for supervisory and management positions than the Bachelor’s (UAS) degree.
Reasoning for decision-makers
It’s in everyone’s interest that the Master’s (UAS) degree is better known
Employers recognise the immediate development of skills in workplaces where employees have completed the BBA degree (UAS) alongside work. The Master’s (UAS) degree meets the competence requirements of the labour market very well, which is why it’s sad that it’s not well known in working life. Poor recognition of the degree affects the employment of those who have completed the degree. Better recognition of the degree makes it easier for those who have completed the degree to find employment, which in turn motivates them to complete a higher degree.
Approximately half of the members of the Professionals of Business and Technology, the rest of the population and employers consider the current Finnish degree title (tradenomi YAMK) unclear. The members of the Professionals of Business and Technology who have completed the Master’s (UAS) degree in particular have criticised the current degree title, and 70 per cent of them don’t consider the title clear and descriptive. Those who have completed the Master’s (UAS) degree agree with changing the degree title the most, and those who have completed a university degree agree the least. Approximately 40 per cent of those who have completed a university degree agree with changing the title.
Our solution
Changing the Finnish degree title to Maisteri AMK
Changing the Finnish title to “tradenomi (Maisteri AMK)” would improve the recognition of the degree and understanding of the skills it provides. The working life-oriented Master’s (UAS) degree is a natural postgraduate degree and training path for those who have completed the Bachelor’s (UAS) degree. Vocational Master’s degrees are also Master’s degrees internationally, and the English language title for the Master’s (UAS) degree (Finnish: YAMK-tutkinto) is Master of Business Administration in Finland. The Finnish degree title should be consistent with the English title.
