Making part-time work possible

  • Goal

Help with coping from shorter working hours

Currently, it’s not possible to reduce working hours solely on the basis of the employee’s need, but the reduction of working hours requires the employer’s consent. Consent also does not automatically guarantee the employee’s return to full working hours. An exception to this is partial childcare leave and partial sick leave, which also requires the employer’s consent.

There can be several moments during your career when your workload increases and you may find it difficult to cope. The situations are not necessarily due to working life, but they also affect working life. Temporarily reducing the workload would help maintain work ability and prevent burnout.

Reasoning

Benefits for employers and the society

The population is ageing, which means that more and more people of working age take care of their ageing relatives in addition to their children. The change would offer flexibility in the middle of peak years. The change can be beneficial in practically any situation that does not entitle the employee to sick leave. Above all, the change can be beneficial in proactively promoting coping and maintaining work ability.

Our solution

Subjective right to part-time work

The Professionals of Business and Technology promotes reducing your workload by promoting the subjective right to part-time work. In practice, this would mean that the employee could temporarily reduce their working hours at their own discretion.

What would the change mean in practice?

  • The possibility of reducing working hours by decision of the employee is added to the Working Time Act.
  • The amount and method of the reduction is primarily agreed with the employer. If no agreement can be reached, the daily working hours are reduced to six hours.
  • A written agreement must be made about the reduced working hours, which is valid for a maximum of 26 weeks at a time.
